Be Happy Today

We think that we will be happy when we buy a house, or a flat. Then  we feel that we will be happy when we buy a car. Similarly ------ when our son completes his education… , and then   …..when he gets a a job, and then  ----- when he gets married….. , and then when you beget a grandson or granddaughter, not realizing that every day we are going near to our graves, but still waiting and waiting for happiness to come and tap your door, least realizing that even if luck comes and taps our door, we have still to get up and open the door. But when the said desire is accomplished,  we are no more enamoured of it. Here I am reminded of a beautiful couplet of an Urdu poet, which reads as follows:

Du-ni-ya  ji-say   Kah-tay hain , Jaa-doo  ka  khi-lo-naa  hai.
Mil Jaa-yey to mit-ti hai , kho jaa-yey to so-na hai.

The next thing is that we always live for tomorrow and defer our happiness for tomorrow, or some future day, or month, or year. As the adage goes, “Hills are fine far away”, we fail to see, perceive, and enjoy the beauty of the beautiful green valley, in which we are presently there. We always link our happiness to some distant and some unachievable thing.  And further it is linked to a precondition of some event happening. And the said event does not happen as proposed by us. Most of the time it does not, otherwise the adage

Man proposes and God disposes.”

would not be so popular.

Have we ever tried to taste and enjoy the happiness of today,  ----  of this moment? No. Because what is at hand and already with us has no importance for us, because,

Ghar ki mur-ghi daal ba-raa-bar.

In my opinion, Happiness has nothing do with money and material things. It is only a mental phenomenon. Robert Lynd, in an article on contentment, writes about an old man, who died with contentment, even though the business he passed on to his sons, as his legacy, was nearing bankruptcy, because every night his sons were reporting to him that their business was growing by leaps and bounds. The best way to be happy is to live in today. As soon as we get up in the morning, prepare a list of the blessings, God has already showered on us, let them be as small as a good night’s sleep, and then thank God for it. Keep thanking God for all the blessings of God. Let us not bother about what we do not have. Let us feel happy and let us thank the Almighty for what we already have, and what the Almighty has already blessed us with. Let us begin our day with a Thanks-giving to the Almighty; the day will be good, and similarly the month and the year and the whole life. Further the Almighty, through every religion, says that He likes those who thank Him, and He promises to give more and more to them .
Our elders and our ancestors have shown this path long back, by explaining to us the method of making a line bigger without touching that line. And that is by drawing another smaller line adjacent to it.

Let us practice it and let us begin every day of ours by a Thanks-giving to our Maker, I am sure all todays of ours shall be happy days and we shall not miss the happiness, waiting for it, like waiting on a plat-form for a train which has already left before our arriving on the plat-form, or which will never arrive.

                    Wish you a Happy Day!
